Your packing list depends on how you plan to explore the park. Food and water options are limited on the grounds. The weather changes drastically by season, and the trails require proper preparation.

What should I wear to Valley Forge?

Wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes and weather-appropriate layers.

You need sturdy footwear to handle grass, gravel, and uneven ground around the historic monuments. Summers in Pennsylvania are hot and humid, while winters are cold and damp. Dress in layers to adjust to changing temperatures.

Do I need bug spray or sunscreen?

Yes, pack both sunscreen and insect repellent.

The park manages over 1,300 acres as tall grass meadows. Sun shade is limited on these open landscapes, making a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen essential. Use insect repellent to protect against ticks and mosquitoes, especially on the wooded Mount Joy Trails.

Should I bring my own food and water?

Yes, pack a picnic lunch and a reusable water bottle.

On-site food options are very limited. Bring your own snacks or meals. You can eat at Wayne's Woods Picnic Area, which has shaded tables and restrooms. Note that picnicking is prohibited on open landscapes or historic earthworks. Water fountains are also limited along the 10-mile tour route.

What electronics should I pack?

Bring your smartphone and a portable charger or power bank.

A fully charged phone is useful for following digital maps and self-guided audio tours. Download the NPS app or a purchased audio guide before arriving. Since you will be outdoors for several hours, a power bank ensures your battery lasts the entire 10-mile loop.

Yes, pets are welcome in the park.

If you bring a dog, you must keep them on a leash no longer than 6 feet. You are required to clean up after them. Pack waste bags and extra water for your pet.
